There was a time when a good story could keep us busy for hours.
We would sit with a book, listen to a story from our grandparents, or wait eagerly for someone to tell us what happened next. We didn't need a screen full of colours, background music or notifications. A few words and a little imagination were enough to take us somewhere else.
Things have changed quite a bit.Today, we wake up and reach for our phones. We watch one Reel, then another, and somehow 20 minutes disappear without us even noticing. While waiting for a bus, having tea, sitting with family or taking a small break, our fingers keep scrolling.
There is nothing wrong with enjoying videos or social media. They entertain us, help us discover new things and sometimes even make us laugh after a tiring day.But somewhere along the way, have we started forgetting the simple pleasure of reading?
When was the last time you read a story just for yourself?
Not for work. Not because someone asked you to. Not because it was part of an exam or an assignment.Just because you wanted to.
A good story does something special. It makes us pause. It lets us imagine places we have never visited and understand people whose lives may be very different from ours.Sometimes a story makes us smile. Sometimes it reminds us of someone we miss. Sometimes it gives us the courage to look at a difficult situation differently. And sometimes, a few simple lines stay in our minds for years. That's the beauty of stories. We may forget where we read them, but we often remember how they made us feel.
Children need stories, not just screens
As parents, we often think about what our children are watching, what games they are playing and how much time they spend on mobile phones. But perhaps there is another question worth asking:
Are we also giving them enough opportunities to read, imagine and think?
Children learn many things through stories. A story about a little bird can teach kindness. A story about a difficult journey can introduce courage. A story about friendship can help a child understand care and sharing.
We don't always need to explain every lesson to children. Sometimes, the story itself does the work. And it doesn't have to be complicated. Even ten minutes of reading together before bedtime can become a beautiful family habit.
One day, children may not remember every toy or video they enjoyed, but they might remember the stories their parents read to them.
Reading is not only for children
We often encourage children to read, but adults need stories too.
Life becomes busy. Work, responsibilities, family and everyday worries leave very little time for ourselves.A meaningful story can be a small break from that routine. It can remind us that other people also face difficulties, make mistakes, start again and find their own way forward.
Not every story needs to have a happy ending. Some stories simply help us understand life a little better.Reading doesn't need to become another task on our to-do list. It can be something we enjoy at our own pace, even if it's just five minutes a day.
Let's make space for stories again
I don't think we need to stop using social media or give up our favourite videos. Technology is part of our lives, and it can be useful in many ways. But perhaps we can create a little balance.
Instead of spending every free moment scrolling, we could sometimes read a short story. Instead of sending only videos to our children, we could share a story with them. Instead of waiting for the perfect time to start reading, we could begin with just a few minutes today.Small habits can make a difference when we keep them going.
A small initiative: 1Kahani
This thought inspired me to create 1Kahani.com — a simple online space for people who still enjoy meaningful stories.
The idea is not to create another platform that demands your attention. It is to offer a quiet place where children, parents and adults can discover stories, take a break from everyday distractions and enjoy reading.
You can explore different kinds of stories, including:
Inspirational stories that encourage us to keep moving forward.
Stories for children that introduce kindness, friendship, courage and imagination.
Life lessons that make us think about everyday situations differently.
Meaningful and real-life stories that offer new perspectives on people and life.
Whether you have five minutes during a coffee break or want to read a story with your child before bedtime, you are welcome to visit.

I hope 1Kahani becomes a small part of someone's daily reading habit — perhaps a child discovering the joy of stories, a parent spending a few extra minutes with their child, or an adult finding a little inspiration after a long day.
One small request
If you have children at home, try reading one story with them this week.If you have a friend who enjoys reading, share a good story with them. And if you haven't read anything beyond social media posts for a while, perhaps today is a good day to begin again.
We don't have to choose between technology and books. We just need to make room for both.Because sometimes, the best thing we can give ourselves is not another video to watch, but a story worth remembering.
Let's bring back the joy of reading, one story at a time.

One story can make a difference. One story can stay with us forever.
